UNDER ARM FAT

ACCESSORY AXILLARY BREAST



Underarm Fat

A common problem where a female complaints about presence of a lump in one or both under arms. Usually starts in puberty but also common after pregnancy.

Symptoms:
Painless or sometimes a painful, soft lump in the axilla.



Investigation of Choice:

Ultrasound 

FNAC


Treatment: Is usually surgical. Can be done as a liposuction but risk of injuring major vessels and nerves is there.


Open approach has dual advantage:

Safety

Complete Clearance with removal of excess skin.



The scar is usually hidden in the skin creases and the patient gains a normal contour in  a months time.


PATIENT is usually discharged to home on the same day or the next morning.

Underarm Bulge: Axillary Breast?

 DO YOU HAVE AN UNDERARM BULGE?


2 TO 6% Women have Accessory Axillary (Underarm) breast tissue which is usually seen as an unsightly bulge.




Reasons why women come for Plastic Surgery Consult:
  1. Inability to wear Proper Clothes
  2. Swelling, Sticky Skin and Discomfort
  3. Cosmetic Concerns
  4. Pain in the Lump
  5. Fear of Malignancy/ Cancer

How does it Develop?

It is a common occurrence in women. This swelling can develop anywhere along the line known as Milk Line and the commonest region is the axilla.






When does it present?

It usually becomes enlarged during Pregnancy and Lactation but can become noticeable during Puberty and during the menstrual cycle.


What are the Treatment Options?
  1. Open Excision
  2. Liposuction
  3. Injection Lipolysis
  4. Axillaplasty


Is there Risk of Developing Cancer in it?

Incidence of developing cancer in Axillary Accessory Breast is very uncommon (0.2% to 0.6%).
