STING OF THE STRING (CHINESE DOR)

 STING OF THE STRING

The festivals of Lohri and Vasant Panchami are synonymous with kite flying in the northern states of India. Lohri is celebrated for numerous reasons one among them is that it falls on the eve of winter solstice, that is the longest night of the winters and as the beginning of a financial new year for the Punjabi farmer. Over time, people have associated Lohri to the tale of Dulla Bhatti. The central character of most Lohri songs, who lived in Punjab during the reign of Emperor Akbar. He was regarded as a hero in Punjab for he rescued Hindu girls being forcibly sold in the slave market of the Middle East. He arranged their marriages to Hindu boys with rituals and provided them with dowries. So every other Lohri song has words to express gratitude to Dulla Bhatti. For Punjabis, this is more than just a festival, it is also an example of a way of life. Lohri celebrates fertility and the spark of life.

Vasant Panchami too is a famous festival that marks the end of the winter season and ushers in the springtime. Goddess Saraswati is the one who gives the essence (sara) of our own self (swa). She is considered the personification of knowledge. Vasant Panchami has a specific meaning, Vasant means Spring, whereas Panchami means the fifth day of the spring. It falls on Panchami - on the Waxing Moon. The color yellow celebrates the brilliance and the vibrancy of life.

The vibrance of these two festivals is witnessed in the sky filled with innumerable shapes and colors of KITES.  The history of kite flying is equally engrossing as is the recreation itself. Kites were used approximately 2,800 years ago in China, where materials ideal for kite building were readily available: silk fabric for sail material; fine, high-tensile-strength silk for flying line; and resilient bamboo for a strong, lightweight framework. The kite was said to be the invention of the famous 5th century BC Chinese philosophers Mozi and Lu Ban. Ancient and medieval Chinese sources list other uses of kites for measuring distances, testing the wind, lifting men, signaling, and communication for military operations. The earliest known Chinese kites were flat (not bowed) and often rectangular.

After its introduction into India, the kite further evolved into the Fighter kite known as the PATANG in India. In India annual kite running competitions are held every year in the month of January. Lohri & Vasant Panchami are the times when the skies are filled with hues of different colors and forms of kites.

The science behind these graceful flybys presented us with a volte face (the darker side) in the form of the glass laced, polyethylene fiber blended with the metal zinc thread; in common verbatim labeled as “The Chinese Dor”. The accurate constituents of the string are still not known. It was January of 2012 that the Indian people had a taste of its true potential; a kite string that would cut all Indian threads that were hand woven called “Manjha” but also have property to stretch without breaking leading to extensive cuts on people caught in its tangles; leading to partial amputations and injuries to the face and neck as populace of Amritsar found out the hard way; Electrocution, an unheard entity, but the metal content would transmit current in the vicinity of high voltage wires or when wet leading to fatalities in the states of Punjab and Jammu in the year 2011.

The newsprints were full of incidences of fatalities resulting from the string that had created ripples in the kite flying ways. The infamous Chinese Dor was then banned in Punjab, Gujrat & Maharashtra; but it still finds favor with the ill-informed and the un-repenting. Even with its fatal outcomes, traders are stock piling it as the demand fuels its sales.

Human nature is to strive for material things that are forbidden and the tragedy is that we find what we are looking for and are left to fend ourselves while facing the consequences of our selfish actions.

The Chinese Dor is not to be blamed in its entirety as it was intended to be used to fly large kites for Kite flying Competitions not the usual “duels” that we witness in our skies during Lohri and Vasant Panchami. The polyethylene fiber used in making the string has a large breaking load and stretches before breaking giving it a unique nature to resist all attempts of the Indian made Dor to break it. The lacing of glass adds the teeth to the Dor.

Accidents happen when we are not careful. A learned decision as to which string (dor) you will buy might make a difference of life and death for you, your family member and/ or for an unknown passerby who was just admiring the view. As a doctor, I would say, “If you have a bleeding wound, give pressure over the part from where it is bleeding and rush to the nearest hospital.” But as a concerned citizen, I would say, “Prevention is better than cure. Make a wise decision and keep the playing field even.”

Have a Happy Lohri and a joyous Vasant Panchami.

LUDHIANA

THE SUMMER BUMP

EATINNG WENT UNABATED DURING THE LOCKDOWN

The Lockdown in the country is remaining majority on paper now but during these last 8 odd months of summer for some of us our bodies entered a Lock down phase that led to that unsightly Summer Bump.

No I am not talking about unplanned pregnancies but yes about the

love handles that seem to be holding on your waist line rather than

the sinuous curve that you expected after all the workout and dieting

during the end phases of the national lockdown.

THE BULGES.......

It involves efforts akin to Superman, who would have said,

“Up up and Away”.

And still after the morning and evening runs the bulge on your

lower tummy doesn’t seem to move and inch a bit lesser.

The arms seem to tell a different story, with biceps adding to the bulk of the triceps and the DOUBLE chin showing all the signs of evening and late night binge.

DOES YOUR DOUBLE CHIN BOTHER YOU?

Worry not, if the Gyms, Diets and HIITs have not been able to give

that final curve back to you. You still have the option open for

minimally invasive plastic surgery procedures that can be done as

day care with you reaching back to the comfort of your bed before

the evening is over.

HIIT SESSION, ANTI AGEING WORKOUTS....

Targeted Liposuction,

Mini Tummy Tuck,

Fat dissolving Injections

and customized therapies are for your perusal

with consultation of a Plastic Surgeon

to discuss the best option for you.

MINI TUMMY TUCK CAN BE DAY CARE

Taking all precautions in this COVID era, including testing of

patients and staff, segregation of patients for plastic surgery as well

as variable timings for surgery as suited for your comfort have been

in force.

LOCKDOWN LUDHIANA BLOOMS WITH GULMOHARS

7 TIPS FOR WINTER DIABETIC FOOT CARE

7 TIPS FOR WINTER DIABETIC FOOT CARE

Winter brings its own set of problems for patients suffering form diabetes. Burns due to hot water, heater, electric blankets and radiant heaters cause additional woe for the patient. We give you seven steps to safety to keep your feet happy.

1. Keep your feet DRY:

When it comes to your feet, rain, snow and slushy weather have something in common: they cause dampness. Moisture that collects between your socks and your feet and toes can form bacteria, which can lead to an infection.

Keep your feet dry and pay special attention to the areas between your toes.

2. Avoid Direct Heat to your Feet:

Diabetic patients have numbness and they may not feel when their feet are burning.

They can sustain second or third-degree burns, which can cause serious foot problems.

Patients with diabetes should not put their feet in hot water.

They should test bath water with their hands or a thermometer first.
Avoid using warming aids on the feet, such as electric blankets, heated shoe inserts and heating pads.

3. Moisturize your feet:

Use a moisturizer daily to keep dry skin from itching or cracking.

Do not moisturize between the toes--that could encourage a fungal infection.

Patient should be careful if he/she observes red shiny areas on their feet, this is a warning sign that the skin will form an ulcer.

4. Get the RIGHT SHOES:

Patients with diabetes should wear well-fitted shoes with supportive soles and a wide toe box to reduce cramping.

During the colder seasons, extra thought should be given to sock texture and how the weather will affect walking conditions

5. Trim Those NAILS :

Untrimmed or infected toenails are a frequent cause of infections and ulcers.

You can soak your feet first to soften the nails and then cut them straight across.

If you have trouble trimming your nails, get help.

6. Keep Blood Sugar Under Control:

Your feet absorb a lot of the daily wear and tear of your body

They are one of the first places poor diabetic control will show up.

7. Visit your Plastic Surgeon Regularly:

Work with your doctor to control your sugar and be sure to watch your diet, maintain your weight, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking.

Your feet will thank you!!!!!

SCAR WARS: MYTHS AND SOLUTIONS

Scar Wars: Myths and Solutions

Anyone who remembers his or her childhood would remember their falls, skids and skirmishes that left behind the tell tale signs we call SCARS. He or she has equal number of vivid stories to narrate with them. Some of the most common queries regarding scars are answered here.

Myth No.1: How many sutures will be put on the wound?

Answer: Scars do not depend on the number of sutures. Rather a thicker suture causes more scarring than a fine suture. Even though there are more stitches with the fine thread, they can be removed earlier leaving behind an insignificant scar.

(SUTURED WITH A THICK THREAD: TRAM TRACK SCAR)

Myth No.2: Sutures cause scarring of the wound.

Answer: Suturing a wound brings cut ends of skin together helping it heal faster. Any wound that takes less than 2-3 weeks to heal leaves a fine scar. We usually remove the sutures within 5-7days to prevent scarring.

(SUTURED WITH A FINE THREAD: NEARLY INVISIBLE SCAR)

Myth No.3: Dissolving sutures do not cause scarring

Answer: Dissolving sutures (absorbable sutures) are usually used to close the inner layers of the wound to prevent stretching of the scar. On the skin they can be used as a sub-cuticular (under the skin) stitch in a clean wound with healthy margins. When dissolving sutures are applied as normal sutures on the skin they may dissolve early in infection and the wound may gape open; or they may dissolve late and leave behind suture track scars.

Myth No.4: Glue is better than suturing and leaves no scars

Answer: Tissue glues are used in wounds that are well approximated (not gaping open). The scar shall depend on the approximation of the skin, the depth of the wound and site (immobile areas). If applied in a gaping wound, it tends to coat the wound edges and does not allow it to heal until the glue is scrapped off.  Glue usually complements the suturing but not as a substitute.

 (Note: No financial disclosures)

Myth No.5: Wounds left open dry faster

Answer: Superficial wounds like abrasions are left open with topical antibiotic creams and they usually heal within a week.  Deep wounds like deep abrasions, contaminated wounds (dirt & debris), lacerations on hands, feet and face need to be sutured and dressed for early healing and better scaring. Scar depends on the extent of tissue loss and time taken for the wound to heal not if it was left open.

Myth No.6: Sunlight fades the scars

Ans: There’s nothing about tanning that’s healthy for your skin. UV rays lead to hyperpigmentation (make the scar darker). One should cover the  scars with sunscreen with at least SPF 30—or better yet, covering with (white) clothing—to help the scars continue to fade and blend in.

Myth No.7: Scar creams make scars disappear

Answer: It is untrue. Multiple advertisements and scar creams claim to make the scar disappear. Once a scar, always a scar. We can improve the quality of the scar with these creams, make them lighter, with massage make them softer and with plastic surgery (techniques) and lasers hide them in the normal skin creases. But cannot make them disappear totally.

Myth No.8: Why revisit the plastic surgeon once the wound has healed?

Answer: Scars undergo numerous changes in the first 3 to 6 months in their colour, texture, size, height and feel. Reciprocally, equal number of interventions need to be done at appropriate time to get the best results whether you got stitches or left the wound to heal by itself.
